Recent statements from experts indicate that the development of artificial intelligence (AI) may not end well for humans. But that is one scenario that Hollywood has long foreshadowed. Express looks at a few movies where artificial intelligence systems go rogue and end up taking on their human masters...

What is AI? Artificial intelligence (AI) is the intelligence exhibited by machines. An ‘intelligent’ machine is a flexible rational agent that perceives its environment and takes actions that maximize its chance of success. Modern examples of AI include computers that can beat human players at Chess and Go.

2001: A Space Odyssey One of Stanley Kubrick's greatest works, the film features an astronaut travelling to Jupiter with Hal — a sentient computer. Slowly the computer begins to take control of the spacecraft and the mission, displaying eerily human-like behaviour.

Transcendence

Dr Will Caster, played by Johny Depp, wants to create the perfect AI system. However, after he is shot dead, his consciousness is uploaded into the sytem, which leads to serious complications.

The Matrix

 This flick, by the Wanchowski brothers, would later go on to become a cult classic. It featured a dystopian future where machines had taken over the world, and were cultivating humans as energy sources.  Transcendence Dr Will Caster, played by Johny Depp, wants to create the perfect AI system. The Terminator

James Cameron took artificial intelligence and science fiction to a new level with The Terminator. Arnold Schwarzenegger played a robot sent from the future by an artificial intelligence ruling over mankind.

Age of Ultron

In this flick, Tony Stark aka Iron Man builds an Artificial Intelligence system with the help of Bruce Banner (Hulk). Soon the AI, Ultron, gains control and threatens to wipe out the entire human race.
