LOS ANGELES: Michu Meszaros, the circus star who brought to life the title role alien in 1980s sitcom “Alf”, is dead. He was 76.

Meszaros was reportedly found unresponsive in his Los Angeles home about a week ago by his manager Dennis Vargas, reports tmz.com. He is said to have spent several days later in a coma.

A page on online fundraising website GoFundMe was recently launched to help Meszaros with medical expenses, as he struggled with health issues up until his death, and funeral costs. The organiser of the page, Richard Leo LaMotte, also wrote on his Facebook page that the actor had died.

Meszaros was born in Hungary and began performing in the circus in his teens. He was 2 ft 9 inches tall, which gave him the unofficial title as "the smallest man on earth".

He eventually joined Ringling Bros Barnum and Bailey Circus in the 1970s.

Meszaros was close friends with the late pop star Michael Jackson.
