LOS ANGELES: A live-action film based on popular Japanese anime, Gundam, is being developed jointly by Legendary Entertainment and Sunrise Animation.

In an announcement made at the 2018 Anime Expo, the two studios revealed that they will co-produce the project, said a statement from Legendary.

The Gundam series started in 1979 and was set in the Universal Century, an era in which humanity's growing population has led people to emigrate to space colonies.

Eventually, the people living in the colonies seek their autonomy, and launch a war of independence against the people living on Earth.

The battles in the story, in which the characters pilot robots known as mobile suits, are wildly popular.

However, the story of the live-action version of the anime is being kept under wraps.

No actors, writers, or directors are on board yet.

Producer Cale Boyter will oversee the project for Legendary.
