LOS ANGELES:  The sequel to "Zombieland" is in the works, with most of the original cast set to reprise their roles.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Zombieland 2" will be directed by Ruben Fleischer and produced by Gavin Polone. Both were part of the original film released by Sony Pictures in 2009.

The writers of the first film, Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, known for the superhit "Deadpool" franchise, will also return for the second part.

Actors Emma Stone, Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg and Abigail Breslin remain the lead cast members.

The film will start production in January and is scheduled for an October 2019 release, exactly 10 years after the original.

"Zombieland" was a horror comedy movie following four strangers who band together for survival in a zombie apocalypse. It was a critical and commercial success. This is one of those projects that fans have wanted to see happen for a long time and no one wanted to see it happen more than Emma, Woody, Jesse and Abigail," said Columbia Pictures president Sanford Panitch.

"These are some of the most in-demand actors, and I think they are making this movie because they love these characters. We are thrilled Ruben was willing to come back to direct the sequel, as his work on "Venom" has been truly amazing," he added.
