Eight classic horror movies to watch this Halloween

Here are some classic horror movies, that were a huge hit back in the day, to binge watch on Halloween night.

Halloween was originally meant to be the celebration of the dead, a day to remember saints and martyrs from the past. As times changed, the festival is now associated with all things spooky. For movie lovers, here are some classic horror movies, that were a huge hit back, to binge watch on Halloween night. 

1. Scream (1996)

Directed by Wes Craven, Scream is a black comedy and slasher genre. The movie revolves around a killer called Ghostface, who kills teenagers until one solves the mystery. Earning around $173 million worldwide, the film was partially based on true events. Ghostface's mask was based on Edvard Munch's famous painting 'The Scream’. The movie was followed by three sequels. 

2. The Exorcist (1973)

The film is about a teenage girl, Regan, who is possessed by a devil and how her mother with the help of two priests saves the girl. Directed by William Friedkin, the movie is part of an exorcist franchise and is considered as one of the highest grossing films in history with over $441 million worldwide.

Considered as one of the greatest horror films of all time, the film experienced troubled production and a few claimed that the set was cursed. The set even caught fire during the shoot causing delays and the creepiest part is that the whole set was destroyed apart from Regan's room, which was completely undamaged. This movie is not for the weak hearts and you've been warned over the spider walk scene. 

3. Child's Play (1988)

Who knew an innocent gift would turn into an evil mess? A widow unknowingly purchases a doll named Chucky, which is possessed by a serial killer, to gift her six-year-old son. The doll comes up with creative ways to kill people, biting, stabbing and what not. You would never want to buy a doll ever again after watching this movie. The film was made into several sequels and a TV series is in production for a release in 2019.

4. Halloween (1978)

Directed by John Carpenter, Halloween tells the story of a serial killer, Michael Myers. On a Halloween night, six-year-old Michael brutally murders his 17-year-old sister and was locked away for 15 years. He then escapes while being transferred for a court date and continues his killings and targets teenage babysitters on Halloween night.

5. Dead Alive (1992)

What's Halloween without a zombie movie in the list? Originally titled as Braindead, this dark comedy was directed by Peter Jackson. A village boy's mother gets bitten by a rabid rat-monkey and dies. She wakes up from the grave and converts the residents of Newtown into a swarm of zombies. This blood-splattered horror masterpiece is considered as one of the goriest fright films of all time by movie critics. Better have a bucket nearby, just in case.

6. The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

Clarice Starling, a young FBI agent, investigates a vicious murderer nicknamed Buffalo Bill, who skins young women after killing them. To get further insight into the investigation, she seeks help from Dr. Hannibal Lecter, a former psychiatrist and a cannibalistic serial killer. Buffalo Bill from this psychological horror movie is based on three serial killers. With a nail-biting turn of events, would Clarice Starling find the madman?

7. The Blair Witch Project (1999)

Three film students travel to Maryland Black woods to shoot a documentary on the legendary Local Blair Witch for their project. They interview the locals about the Blair witch and research about it. While they tent deep in the woods, they hear mysterious noises and are continuously disturbed by some dark force. The students’ curiosity leads to their worst nightmare. While they fear for their lives will they escape the dark woods?
  
8. The Shining (1980)

Directed by Stanley Kubrick, the film is based on Stephen King's 1997 novel The Shining. Jack Torrance, an aspiring writer moves to an isolated Historic Overlook Hotel with his family in winter. Jack ignores the manager's warning about a previous caretaker, who went crazy and slaughtered his family. His son, Danny gets bloody visions and "shining" hints frequently. While Jack starts exhibiting weird and crazy behavior, his wife Wendy tries to escape the hotel with Danny. With Wendy and Danny trapped in the hotel, will they escape from the murderous threats from Jack?
