B-Town’s fresh talent Alia Bhatt seems to be on the road to a peak in her career. After the release of her second film Highway, Alia is all set to sizzle again in her forthcoming film 2 States with Arjun Kapoor.

With this film, the young actress feels she has graduated from being a student. “My character in the film finishes her post graduation and wants to get married. This is a very mature role and no where close to that in Student of the Year,” she says.

2 States is an adaptation of Chetan Bhagat’s novel of the same name. Alia says she has read the book and found it interesting, but admits that the movie version needs to have some changes. “Though it is an adaptation, we have taken the liberty of tweaking the story a bit. A lot had to be chopped off for the story to fit the screen time. However, we have tried to stay as true to the book as possible. The songs and dance numbers are very real and contemporary,” she says.

Alia, who plays a Tamil Brahmin girl in the movie, clarifies that 2 States is not aimed at caricaturing Tamilians or Punjabis.

“The beliefs, ideologies and lives of the families of the lead couple are completely different. We have tried to portray the difficulties the couple faces because of that.”

“Inter-caste marriages are still unacceptable in most parts of the country. But when you fall in love, you don’t think about which caste the person comes from,” says Alia, adding, “In this film, we have shown both the lovers’ side of the story as well as the parents’.”

Alia, who is trying to carve a niche for herself in the entertainment industry, is finding it difficult to deal with rumours of her intimacy with B-Town heroes.

“To be honest, I still don’t know how to handle it. I am not able to convince people that Arjun and I are just friends. I will get upset if the film gets affected because of such gossip,” she says.

Her recent pictures with Arjun have gone viral. “Three photos with Arjun and they have made a big deal out of it. I take a lot of pictures in general, with my cat, my friends...those were just a few of them,” she explains.

The latest entrants to the B-Town who are said to be the newest rivals are Alia Bhatt and Parineeti Chopra. What does Alia think about it?

“People who watched us on Koffee With Karan saw how friendly Parineeti and I are. I have also said from time to time that there is no bitterness between us. We are in the same field and we are competing in our own ways and not with each other.”

On the elections, she says, “I encourage everybody to cast their  vote. There are 12 crore young voters in our country this year. Even if half of them go out and vote, this election will have an impact on the country’s future.”
