I had to choose between dance and music: Ayushmann Khurrana

The Dum Laga Ke Haisha star can be seen in the new music video ‘Ik Vaari.’

Though Ayushmann Khurrana will not have a film release in 2016, the Dum Laga Ke Haisha star can be seen in the new music video ‘Ik Vaari.’ The star talks about collaborating with brother Aparshakti Khurana for the first time (Aparshakti has been credited with composing and penning the song), his take on onscreen intimacy and his forthcoming film Meri Pyari Bindu.

For the first time, you are seen dancing in your new music video ‘Ik vaari’!

I just tried yaar (laughs). In school, I was known as a dancer but I had to choose between dance and music; and I chose music. Later, in college, I had to choose between music and theatre I chose theatre.

What would you choose now  — music or acting?

I think both are parallel vectors for me. The Indian film industry is about all these things and you can’t survive without music. If I get to lend my voice to my own character on screen, it is just incredible. My life is incomplete without music for sure.

Who have you said ‘Ik vaari haan keh de’ to?

I cannot say anybody’s name other than my wife Tahira’s (laughs).

Tell me something about the video.

It’s in both Hindi and Punjabi. It started as Punjabi song but there’s also the Aashiqui number (‘Tu meri zindagi hai’) in between. It’s a very organic song. Pradeepda (Sircar) directed the video and for the audio for the first time I am collaborating with my brother Aparshakti Khurrana ... so this is his sensibility.

Would you categorize this number as sexy?

It’s not sexy, it’s romantic. Of course, the video is sexy but the song is romantic.

The last scene of the video has a modern take on the Aashiqui poster which had the actors’ heads covered by a jacket. Did it make your wife insecure?

(Laughs) No, she is not insecure. You can’t be insecure when you are marrying an actor I think. It’s a part of your job and you have to accept it. She is also an artiste and she understands that.

Newcomer Aisha Sharma (Neha Sharma’s sister) has been paired opposite you in the video.

I’ll tell you something about her. You have to see her Instagram account — it’s so funky, so cool and she has added lots of videos. And she doesn’t follow anybody! My ex-manager Rani (who was my producer when I was working in radio) was instrumental in this because she told me that Ayesha is very fresh and funky. I checked her Instagram account and I thought she is amazing .

With which actress would you like to do a single?

That depends on the song. I would love to collaborate for the audio and video with actresses who sing.
