CHENNAI: THE Madras High Court has directed Bollywood actor Sushmita Sen to appear before the trial court in Chennai on September 18 in connection with an alleged illegal import of an expensive car.

“Considering the facts and circumstances of the case, the petitioner is directed to appear before the trial court on September 18 which falls on Monday for providing evidence. On the said day, the trial judge, after concluding matters of calling and emergency matters, shall take up this matter and cross-examine the petitioner.

The same shall be completed the same day. Jurisdictional police is directed to give protection to the petitioner and her belongings,” Justice R Suresh Kumar said and cancelled the warrant executed against the actor.

The judge was disposing of a writ petition from her,  challenging the warrant issued by the Economic Offences Court in Egmore, the operation of which had already been stayed by the judge last month. The case was registered by the Customs Department and Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) after it was found that the luxury vehicle was imported by misusing the provisions of Transfer of Residence rules of the Exim policy.
