Best known as Sameer Diwan from the TV show, Dekh Bhai Dekh, Shekhar Suman has been in the entertainment industry for over two decades. He was memorable in Reporter, Kabhi Idhar Kabhi Udhar and Chote Babu, and for hosting the comedy show Movers n Shakers. After participating in Jhalak Dikhala Jaa, Suman took time off to work on his debut movie, Heartless, with his son, Adhyayan. After two years, Suman is ready with it. More from the director:

After participating in Jhalak Dikhala Jaa, Shekhar Suman (in picture) took time off to work on his debut movie, Heartless, with his son, Adhyayan.
After being an actor for quite a while, you want to climb the ladder. That is when I decided to take up direction, to broaden my horizons. Heartless is inspired by Joby Harold’s 2007 film,  Awake. The movie explores the subject of anesthesia awareness, a state where the patient can still feel pain.

I am a self proclaimed critic and I cannot make commercial movies where the  hero dances with 200 other dancers. The emotional chord was so high in movies like Sholay, Anand, Mother India and Guru Dutt’s movies. Now, there are only a few directors like Rajkumar Hirani and Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who make meaningful movies.

My immediate choice for the hero was Adhyayan. He’s a brilliant actor. Yes, he made a few mistakes in the past, but this movie will be his best. I told him age is on his side and that he has nothing to lose.

It was completely professional on the sets of the film. No favours for Adhyayan. Off sets, we spend a lot of time together. I am his friend and I know who his friends are and which girl he is hanging out with. We discuss scripts and take a call on his movies.

The movie is very close to me because I lost my second son to a heart problem. My father was a doctor and he wanted me to be one, too. I fulfilled his dream with this movie, as I play the role of a doctor in it. As an actor you finish your part and go on with your life. But  as a director, I now have to edit,  add sound effects, do everything.

Heartless is scheduled to release on Feb 7.
