Now that Shanavas K Bavakkutty Kismath is making the right noises at the box office, let’s turn our attention to music composer Sushin Shyam, who has composed the beautiful and heart-rending romance number Kisa Pathiyil..
The Sufi-inspired song, with its soulful music and meaningful lyrics, has endeared the masses before the movie hit the screens. But, Sushin, who also sang the qawali part of the song, says he never anticipated the immense response.
“I never expected that the movie or even the song, for that matter, to become an instant hit. The fact that the song was released along with the trailer gave it a better reach. In fact, I saw the visuals first and knew my job was to give the audience the right essence of the beautiful romance the lead characters shared,” says Sushin. Though he has been working in the South movie industry for the past few years, it was through a friend that he came to know about Kismath.
“I met the director and saw the final cuts of the movie. I composed the song and he liked it. I was asked to do the background score of the movie, too,” says Sushin.
He might have been a member of the Metal band, ‘The Down Troddence’, but Sushin says he is not really a metal head. “Just because I was part of the band, didn’t disconnect me totally from other genres of music. So, when I had to compose a film song with flavours so different like
‘Kisa Pathiyil..’, it wasn’t much of a daunting task,” says Sushin.
But, the singer-composer says that creating the background score has its own share of challenges. “It may not be as rewarding as composing a song, but I always felt composing the background score is a challenging task. The score should be able to convey the mood and feel of the movie,” says Sushin, who is busy with his next project Ezra.
