Director Ranjith Shankar talks about his latest film
Pretham is spooky and funny

Pretham might be a horror comedy, but director Ranjith Shankar says it wasn’t made to spook you. “It is a story and it has been told like any other tale,” says Ranjith.

But, that doesn’t douse our curiosity about John Don Bosco, the protagonist played by Jayasurya.

“He is a mentalist, one who can read minds.  John, like the audience, explores the ‘unknown’. That’s the crux of Pretham. It satiates the audience’s quench to learn more about the unknown elements around them,” says Ranjith.

Pretham revolves around three friends played by Aju Varghese, Govind Padmasoorya and Sharaffudin (of Premam fame). The college friends have a motto: work hard till they hit 30. And, enjoy a retirement post that. That’s how the friends get together, pool in money and buy a seaside resort. Soon, unpleasant things happen and John Don Bosco is thrown into the equation.

Jayasurya comes in an all-new avatar, with a tonsured head and quirky wardrobe. “The movie has comical and horror elements. The combination is a risky one, but there is no attempt to forcefully scare people,” says Ranjit.

The director says he has always been a fan of horror and had even scripted a horror TV serial, Nizhalukal in 2000.

The movie that has Sruthi Ramachandran and Pearle Maaney in lead roles will hit theatres next week. The trailers and a song, that has been released on You Tube, has already garnered many hits.
