Devayanam explores Thanatophobia and the road to divinity

Sukesh Roy’s Devayanam has KPAC Lalitha playing the central character

KOCHI: Thanatophobia is the extreme and abnormal fear of death. People suffering from this are often preoccupied with the thoughts of dying that leave them anxious all the time. Devammal, the protagonist of Sukesh Roy’s Devayanam, is in the clutches of this phobia. “It was during a train journey I first met a woman caught in this problem. If you are scared of death, you shouldn’t miss this film. It deals with a serious subject and conveys a strong message,” says the director who has also penned the story of Devayanam.  

KPAC Lalitha plays an elderly women from Kalpathi, who is obsessed with the thoughts of death. “In her long film career it’s the first time KPAC Lalitha is playing the central character,” says the director.  Kailash appears as another key character Hari Narayanan, a musician who befriends her. Malavika Mohan, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Neenu Kurup, Devi Ajith and Baby Akshara are also part of the cast.   

According to Hindu mythology there are different paths that lead to divinity. “Devayanam is the first route towards heaven and if you take that there will not be any rebirth,” he explains the relevance of the title.  
Music and dance are two integral ingredients of the film and the crew has many renowned names in the industry. Another highlight of the film will be its locations that include Banras, Varanasi, Rameswaram and Avinashi. Devayanam, produced by  Shobi Joseph under the banner of Angel Boys Creations, will hit the screens shortly.
