The ‘illegal’ early morning shows for Ajith’s much-hyped Arrambam were set to begin at 6 am. But, for fans of the actor, the day began much earlier - at 4 am. At three theatres in the suburbs, where ‘rasigar mandram’ tickets had been sold for up to Rs 800, the cut-outs of the actor were adorned with flowers.
“Thala had asked us not to do all this and stop acting as a fan club, but we cannot help doing it. This is our duty,” said Ilancheliyan, erstwhile secretary of the Thirumullaivoyal Thala Ajith Narpani Mandram.
As expected, the milk and beer abhishekhams on the large banners and cut-out silhouettes of Ajith were dispensed with by 5.45 am and the shows began. Fans were most boisterous at the Rakki theatre complex in Ambattur, Sundar theatre in Poonamallee and the Kasi theatre complex. And all of this euphoria continued throughout the day even as the producer’s office was raided by the I-T department.
What surprised film-goers who watched Arrambam first-day-first-show, was the rebirth of the ‘repeat song’ request from fans. “Except for Rajini films, fans don’t really ask for songs to be repeated. This did not happen even when Enthiran released. But today, at Kasi theatre’s noon show, one song was repeated on demand,” said Kannan, who lives in KK Nagar.
Besides this, he added that fans were dancing in the aisles, in front of the screen and even throwing flowers and confetti every time Ajith appeared on screen.
Released two days before the other Deepavali films and the festival itself, Arrambam is the sole movie running in multiplexes like Mayajaal and AGS, with over 100 shows being screened till the weekend. Even as online ticketing opened for Monday, tickets are quickly being sold out, according to theatre sources.
