It’s a rare sight to see old people applaud and not get annoyed, when a kid whistles in front of them. Then again, it’s probably because nine-year-old Andrea, chose to whistle a tune that was as old as her parents - and then some. On Sivaji Ganesan’s 85th birth anniversary, whistling the song Naan Pesa Nenaipathellam from Paalum Pazhamum was possibly the ‘sweetest’ way to remember the life and times of a legend. The show, called Chevaliar Sivajikku Whistle Anjali, was held over the weekend.
This youngest whistler in the South Zone of the Indian Whistlers Association (IWA), Andrea was inspired by her father, William, who is also a member of IWA. The forty-voice strong whistlers performed hits like Paatum Naane Bhavamum Naane from the movie Thiruvilaiyadal and several other hits.
It also turned to be one of the evenings when this not-so recognized art form drew a huge crowd, “Whistling has been often regarded a rude habit. But whistling a song takes so much effort and people will understand only when they see it. All this while we used to have only our families attend the show, but this time we are very happy to see such a crowd,” said Chaitanya, member of IWA. The Association has been actively promoting this art for past three years though it has been since 2004. They have also conducted shows to tribute Ilaiyaraaja, SPB, A R Rahman and others.
Vasanthakumar, Owner of Vasanth and Co was the chief guest, while ‘Vietnam Veedu’ Sundaram and Kavignar Piraisoodan were also present.
