Vijay endeared a whole bunch of Ajith’s fans on Monday morning when he complimented his ‘rival’ and his film Veeram which released alongwith Vijay’s own Jilla last Friday, “I have heard that Ajith’s film Veeram is also doing well. I would like to congratulate Ajith, Director Siva and the entire team for this victory,” he said at a meet held to celebrate the success of Jilla. This is the first time that Vijay has made a public appearance in 2014 as he opted out of any pre-release publicity for the R B Choudary-produced film.
For someone whose film is raking in money by the bucketful on its opening weekend, Vijay remained reticent and soft spoken as he added, “It is a good sign for Tamil cinema when two films release on Pongal and are able to do well. They used to say that Pongal was not an ideal time to release films together and for the past few years only one film or so were releasing. I’m glad we’ve changed that.”
Vijay was joined by actors Soori and Mahat, director R T Neason and composer D Imman for the success meet. “I don’t want to call this a success meet as I don’t believe in that. I’m just happy that Jilla is doing well and that everyone is happy with the film. I was overwhelmed at the sight of women and families coming to watch the film at 5 am. I have to thank my fans for all the love and support,” he said.
Despite negative reports about its length, Jilla has gone on to gross over `30 crore on opening weekend, including a first day gross of `2.61 crore in Kerala. The makers trimmed the length of the film and brought it to 2.40 hours by Saturday and ensured that it was received well in overseas markets.
