Following directions of the Madras High Court, the Central Crime Branch of the city police on Friday booked film director Gautham Vasudev Menon and four other directors of Photon Kathas Productions based on a cheating complaint by a film producer.
Last week, hearing a petition filed by R Jayaraman, director of RS Infotainment Pvt Ltd, the Madras High Court directed the Deputy Commissioner, Central Crime Branch, to register an FIR against Menon and other directors of Photon if there was a case of cognizable offense.
The dispute relates to the sharing of revenue from Ek Deewana Tha, which is a Hindi remake of the Tamil box office hit Vinnaithandi Varuvayya.
According to Jayaraman, his company entered into a tri-partite agreement with Photon Kathas, led by Menon, and Fox Star Studios Productions on May 16, 2011 for production of the Hindi remake film. As per the agreement, he and Photon Kathas had to invest 25% each of the total cost of Rs 11 crore. Fox Star would pool in the rest; and Jayaraman’s company would get 25% of the profit.
However, he alleged Photon Kathas illegally collected his company’s share of the profit from Fox and refused to pay it to him. As the Chennai city police refused to register a case against Menon, he finally approached the HC.
