Sanam-Shetty

She’s the tall slim beauty from Karnataka who made her Tamil debut with the 3D film Ambuli in 2012. And now, you will see more of her in the yet-to-be-released film Vilasam, directed by Raj Ganesan. Sanam has her hands full with projects in other languages as well. She has completed three films in Malayalam, including a Mammooty starrer in 2013. She has a finger in the Tollywood pie with a film by Raghavendra Rao that is yet to release.

So it isn’t surprising when she says she is more than happy with the way her career is shaping up. Sanam had no plans of a career in movies. She was a busy software engineer in the UK, when she was spotted on Facebook and offered the lead role in Ambuli. She’s never looked back since then. “I quit my job in the UK to pursue my passion for cinema in K’Town. I’ve done several films in other languages but Kollywood is my favourite industry. In fact, I’m part of two more films, Katham Katham and Savari and I am just loving every moment of it.”

Sanam says that she has been a huge fan of Tamil films right from her childhood and wants to work with big directors in the industry like Mani Ratnam, Gautam Menon, Vetrimaaran and Samudrakani.  Her wish list of co-stars include Suriya, Vikram and Jiiva.

In Vilasam, Sanam has gone de-glam. “The story is about how two people meet and change each other’s lives. The hero, Pawan, plays a slumdweller while I’m a college girl. My role is the main thread and the film has a strong message. The meaty role attracted me to the film. I want to do powerful roles and work with sensible directors,” she reveals. “It was only during one duet song that I was allowed to put some make up!” she says with a laugh. This must have been quite a change for the starlet who’s used to a lot of make-up and lots of photoshoots for her various projects, across South Indian films.

The star cast of Vilasam includes Suji Bala, Aruldass, Raj Kapoor, Thalapathy Dinesh and Rajendran.  She’s all praise for Pawan and Katham Katham hero Nanda. “They are brilliant actors but have kept a low  profile. Their career  deserves a boost with a well– a deserved hit,” she says.
