Jayadev, who has worked with filmmakers like Mysskin, R Kannan and Rosshan Andrrews, is directing his flick Pattinapakkam, which is all set to release in a couple of weeks. He tells us, “It’s a thriller and has five different plots. The story revolves around a few characters who end up committing a crime because of certain circumstances and how it affects the rest. Though we have named the movie Pattinapakkam, it’s not set there.”
Though it took three years for him to conceive the idea, the director has completed shooting it in 37 days in and around Chennai. “While Kalaiarasan of Kabali-fame is the protagonist, Pattinapakkam has Chaya Singh and Anaswara Kumar of Yaamirukka Bayamey (2014) fame in important roles. Kalaiarasan plays an engineering graduate who’s searching for a job, and he wants to make quick money. How he meets Chaya, and what they do together, forms the rest of the story,” he elaborates.
Considering that she hasn’t been seen in movies for a while, why Chaya Singh? “We had approached Sneha for the same role. She couldn't do it because she was pregnant. So, naturally our next choice was Chaya. She’s an effortless actor and is highly talented. In this film, she plays a homemaker who escapes from a trap set by a person after her failed married life,” he smiles.
This film also has Yog Japee, John Vijay, MS Bhaskar, R Sundarrajan, Madan Bob and Manoj K Jayan. He’s the son of the late G Balachandran, who worked as a cinematographer in Malayalam cinema. Jayadev shares, “My dad passed away last year, but he wasn’t happy with my decision to enter movies. I was working as an assistant director without his knowledge. I want to make quality films.”
