There was an air of expectancy at the newly renovated Kalaivanar Arangam on Saturday as the 22nd European Union fi lm fest was inaugurated. Those covering the event seemed rather excited about the prospect of catching actors Vishal and Varalaxmi together on the dais. Alas, they were fated to be disappointed, as an indisposed Vishal was unable to make it and RV Udayakumar took his place.

The director, however, proved to be an enthusiastic replacement, as he recounted the effect of French and German movies on Indian filmmakers, in his enterprising speech. He also divulged some inside information about K Balachander, when he said that the ace director’s Nool Veli, starring Saritha, was inspired by a German movie.

Meanwhile, the Minister for Information and Publicity, Kadambur Raja had complimentary things to say about the Indo Cine Appreciation Foundation, and revealed that as part of a future partnership, the Kalaivanar Arangam would play host for the next edition of the Chennai International Film Festival. The loudest cheers of the evening were heard when the Minister recounted an incident on how the late Chief Minister Jayalalithaa dealt with suggestions for a different name for the grand venue. “She categorically said that ‘Kalaivanar’ (late comedian N S Krishnan) was a rare talent whom we all should be proud of and that no other name would be entertained.”
