Mersal row: Teenager arrested in Tamil Nadu for comment on PM Modi during Facebook chat

S Thirumurugan, a 19-year-old youth, was arrested from Srivilliputhur town in Tamil Nadu on October 31 after a complaint was filed against him by BJP district secretary K Marimuthu. Marimuthu and Thirumurugan are Facebook friends. 

A Facebook brawl between the two started when Marimuthu sent a meme to Thirumurugan on Facebook Messenger criticizing Vijay's controversial dialogues from the Tamil movie Mersal. 

Thirumurugan, a Vijay fan, responded to the meme with "filthy language", making a remark on PM Modi. The conversation that was in English was photographed by Marimuthu and used to file a complaint, said a report in Indian Express.

The dialogues in the movie Mersal criticizing the Modi led BJP government's Goods and Service Tax (GST) and Digital India policies had triggered a row. Following this, some political parties had raised their voices against the release of the film. 

Thirumurugan accepted that he made offensive remarks in his conversation with Marimuthu. he was sent to jail in Melur for adolescent offenders in the 18-22 age group, it was further reported. Thirumugan has been reportedly booked under charges including Section 67 of the IT Act, 2000 and Section 505(public mischief) of CrPC.
