He tailored his school uniform at the age of 15, and was one of the first Indian designers to hit the New York Fashion Week. Ashish N Soni is something of an icon in Indian fashion, and he’s all set to introduce to Chennai his passion for bespoke men’s clothing with a brand new collection. Also, he tells us that he hopes to dress Dhanush one day and admires his style, just as much as his music! Excerpts from an interview:

As a woman, it’s a tad difficult for me to imagine what kind of customisation men ask for on a blazer or shirt. Do give us some insight on the same.

It could vary from embroidering one’s initials on the shirt to requesting for a specific lapel shape or width on the jacket to the number of pockets inside the jacket.

Did a lot of research go into the making of each ensemble, given the ‘bespoke’ highlight?

Bespoke men’s clothing is a very important part of my business and has been a passion for mine for over 20 years. I can very proudly say that today a bespoke suit from the Ashish N Soni Atelier is amongst the very best in the country if not ‘the best’. So this is a field I have been researching and updating my own and my teams skills on, on a constant basis over the years. Whether that pertains to the finest wool fabrics to the most hi-tech and luxurious raw material or interlinings to the aspects of construction, we keep ourselves abreast of all developments.

Could you tell us what you’re working on right now?

Right now my focus is on this event I am bringing to Chennai in association with Chivas 18, called ‘Crafted for Gentlemen’ which is a bespoke evening in itself that will revolve around everything special... luxurious whiskey courtesy Chivas 18 served with some great hospitality and an introduction to my very special line of men’s bespoke suits.

How often do you visit Chennai... and are there any fashion inspirations/ muses for you here?

I come to Chennai maybe once a year and I’m very excited by the city’s interest in fashion. I have always admired Chennai’s enthusiasm and boldness with people’s choice in clothing.

You had Anil Kapoor walking the ramp for you recently. Are there any Kollywood actors whom you would like to dress?

Yes, I would love to dress Dhanush, I love his calm style and his music as well.

What do you like to do to unwind?

Well I enjoy travelling, seeing new places and eating at exciting new restaurants when time is ample. On a shorter framework, I love to spend time with my children and family, it brings me back to the best kind of balance.

After over two decades in fashion — and showings at multiple international fashion weeks, what is left to conquer?

I haven’t even completed half the journey yet. The hardwork that went into building the brand has been done to a large extent, now I would like to see the Ashish N Soni brand go pan India in terms of its retail stores and then possibly a few international stores as well.

Do you have a bucket list?

A very long one that involves travelling to some exotic places, and eating at some michelin star restaurants amongst many other things.

(The designer will launch his Bespoke Menswear Line at Evoluzione on Friday.)
