Which is the best film that the superstar acted in? Not easy to say? We ask some celebrity fans of Rajinikanth

Kushboo  actor and politician

How can one shortlist any of Rajinikanth's acting performances? That is definitely a difficult question to answer, given that he has delivered many fabulous performances. I have acted beside him in a few movies, but his off-screen persona has always been that of a down-to-earth individual — a far cry from that of his larger-than-life image. He made such a profound impact in his very first movie, Apoorva Raagangal, even if it was just a minor role. And how can one forget his portrayal of a honest, no-nonsense police inspector in Moondru Mugam? I also love his dual role in Netrikkan — as a philandering father and as the moral and upright son

Jeffrey Vardon, dance choreographer

I remember we worked with Lata Rajinikanth for three months straight on the World Tour programme that she produced, in the early 90s. At that point of time, he used to arrive for rehearsals in a black jacket with metal studs and look very stylish. I thought that it was very showy, but that prompted me to watch the movie - Pandian - and I really like it quite a lot. There's a lot more to him than just his style. I really enjoyed a lot of his early movies as well.

Blaaze playback singer and rapper

My favourite Rajini film is Baba, not just because it was my first rap sequence in a Tamil movie, but due to the message the movie introduced to the world - that of the great Mahavatar Babaji. And that goes beyond box office figures. Also, my biggest songs till date have been the B-A-B-A rap, Style song, Sivaji MGR Rap — all for the one and only 'Boss'. It's crazy that I have never met him face-to-face yet, but I wish him the best; I also pray for his his well being. Happy birthday, sir

Suchitra RJ and playback singer

Rajini's role as Kali in Mullum Malarum is my favourite for the following reasons — one, it is the most honest on-screen depiction of the brother-sister relationship; and two, though it was only his third film, he was brilliant — as the rough-hewn, obstinate winch operator and, in the movie's latter half, as a frustrated individual rendered immobile due to an accident, yet trying to retain his dignity. Even among fabulous actors such as 'Fatafat' Jayalakshmi and Shobha, the Superstar stood out like a shining beacon

Dr V Mohan, Diabetologist

I've always liked his movies because they infuse a sense of reality into his larger-than-life roles. One particular movie that really excited me was Padaiyappa, because it had a very strong character with a strong sense of spirituality. I don't know his personally, but I have heard that he is a very spiritual person. I hope he makes more such movies with strong messages for people.

Dr Narayana Reddy Sex therapist

I've been a huge film buff and reader, which is why I have seen a lot of his films. Basha is a particular favourite of mine, because I think that despite it not being a very realistic situation — he makes the life of a don look very realistic. This is quite different from the superhero-like characters that he started playing by the 80s and 90s, which is why I liked it so much.
