Stand-up comedian Kapil Sharma is on a high. The reasons are not far to seek. His show,  Comedy Nights with Kapil, is today considered numero uno in the non-fiction category and he recently bagged the Indian of the Year–2013 award for his wit. His ability to find humour in any situation has made him one of the most unique comedians in the industry today.

His charisma was evident at the finale of a reality dance show in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, recently. The show had a generous dose of Kapil, who started off with his funny quips to charm the audience. A few minutes into the show, the already over-crowded auditorium swelled with people further and Kapil had to be whisked away from the stage for security reasons, much before the schedule.

Comedy Nights has won him this acclaim and acceptance, but for Kapil, the show is a result of year-long planning. “From a meagre beginning to someone whose show is tagged as one of the highest rated on TV, the feeling is great.

Our initial plan was for just 26 episodes but after receiving a positive response, the crew shot another 10 episodes. Now the channel has asked us to continue the show,” he says.

Kapil, who scripts the show, says he draws ideas from daily life. “My humour has a mass appeal; everybody enjoys it. Our interviews and audience interaction are impromptu. But yes, these days we pick up some current themes on which our show for the week is based,” he says.

Kapil’s K9 Productions, under which he started the show, co-produces the show with SOL Productions. While K9 looks after content, the other components like salaries and recruitment are taken care of by SOL Productions. The set is designed as a house.

Interacting with live audience is the forte of Kapil who began his career with theatre during his college days in Amritsar. “I guess my spontaneity on the show is god-gifted. I have interacted with all kinds of people—the lower middle-class, middle-class, rich, elite and the common man—which has helped me. In the last one year, I have done a number of live shows within the country and abroad which has helped me generate a mass appeal,” he says.

While Kapil wanted to make a career out of theatre, destiny had different plans. “I participated in a comedy challenge show on a Punjabi channel in 2005. Then I won The Great Indian Laughter Challenge in 2007. That is how my tryst with humour began.” He also participated in shows like Ustaadon ke Ustaad, Comedy Circus 2010, Comedy Circus Ke Superstars, Comedy Circus ka Jaadoo and also went on to become the winner of Jubilee Comedy Circus, Comedy Circus ke Tansen and Comedy Circus Ka Naya Daur.

Though there are reports of Kapil planning to enter Bollywood, he says all those are rumours. “I do have some plans in mind, but have not thought of implementing them as of now... will do so when the right time comes,” he says. But yes, he has been working on bringing to fore his other creative side—singing; Sufi music being his favourite. Of late, the comedian can be seen opening his shows by singing a song and during live shows too, he makes it a point to showcase his singing talent. “Kya paata koi break de de. I always wanted to be a singer; yeh acting aur comedy toh by chance ho gaya,” he laughs.

He plans to release his own Sufi and Punjabi music album this year. Universal music label has evinced interest in recording and releasing it. Till then, he would continue giving people their weekly dose of laughter with Comedy Nights with Kapil.
