Dangal
Special Mention: With Aamir Khan’s Dangal releasing a few days ago, one can expect the box office records to be shattered especially with positive reviews coming from across the country.
Neerja
Neerja: The biopic based on flight purser Neerja Bhanot who lost her life even as she rescued many passengers of Pan Am Flight 73 which was hijacked by armed men in 1986. Sonam Kapoor, who played the titular role, kept the audience glued to their seats throughout the movie. Her performance was well received by fans and critics alike. The strong script of the movie ensured that Neerja emerged a gem in Sonam Kapoor’s crown. The biopic earned a lifetime collection of Rs 75 crore in addition to the various awards the movie bagged.
Baaghi
Baaghi: This Tiger Shroff and Shraddha Kapoor starrer took the road less traveled in terms of a story line that dealt with martial arts, which not many actors in Bollywood would possibly experiment with. The movie, which was turned down by critics, saw the action fans flocking theatres in large numbers, adding up a decent figure at the box-office of Rs 76 crore.
Fan
Fan: In the most awaited movie of the year, the fans got to see their favourite star Shah Rukh Khan in a dual role. The story was applauded for SRK's brave decision to experiment with his role. Though the movie got a big weekend opening due to SRK's star value, it began losing stream in the later days. The movie ended at a total life time collection of Rs 85 crore at the Indian box-office.
Shivaay
Shivaay: Ajay Devgan, the director, was back after a long hiatus. In addition to directing the movie and playing the lead role, he also bankrolled the project which was made at a huge budget. The movie saw stiff competition from Ae Dil Hai Mushkil which released the same day. The movie precisely collected Rs 100 crore at the box-office. Despite reaching the magical three-digit figure, the movie was, however, considered an average grosser owing to the high cost involved in its making.
Housefull 3
Housefull 3: In this multi-starrer Akshay Kumar shared the screen space with Abhishek Bachchan, Riteish Deshmukh, Jacqueline Fernandez, Nargis Fakhri, and Lisa Haydon who ensured the audience got their money's worth with the romantic comedy that went on make Rs 107 crore at the box-office, replicating the success of the previous two parts of the franchise.
Ae Dil Hai Mushkil
Ae Dil Hai Mushkil: Ranbir Kapoor, who was desperate for a hit, joined hands with Karan Johar who wielded the director’s microphone after four long years. Much was expected from the combo comprising a promising star cast of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Anushka Sharma and Fawad Khan in prominent roles. With the songs composed by Pritam becoming an instant hit, mush too was expected from this emotional romantic drama. Despite the controversies surrounding the film, it went on to become a smash hit at the box-office, collecting Rs 112 crore.
Rustom
Rustom: Akshay Kumar produced another winner with Rustom which was based on the real life story of Naval Officer K M Nanavati. Esha Gupta and Ileana DCruz shared screen space with Akshay in a blockbluster which kept the radiance hooked to their seats till the end. This murder mystery thriller set the cash register ringing at the box-office collecting Rs 127 crore, just falling behind Airlift by Rs 2 crore.
Airlift
Airlift: It’s just difficult to keep Akshay Kumar out of this list as he produced yet another winner with Airlift. Akshay Kumar is known for taking up roles that in mainstream cinema are considered ‘different’, and he has added another one to his profile. Airlift portrayed the untold story of India’s biggest evacuation mission that won the praise from both critics and fans alike. The movie went on to become a commercial hit, registering Rs 129 crore at the box-office.
M S Dhoni
M S Dhoni-The Untold Story: Sushant Singh Rajput got to play the role of one of India’s most decorated captains M S Dhoni on the big screen. He pulled off the role with utmost perfection in the emotional roller coaster sporting drama. It was therefore no surprise that it raked in the moolah at the box-office, collecting Rs 132 crore.
Sultan
Sultan: Salman Khan once again proved that he is the king of the Bollywood box-office with the tremendous success of Sultan. The Salman Khan starrer included a star cast of Anushka Sharma, Randeep Hooda, Amit Sadh and went on to make a staggering Rs 300 crore collection at the Indian box-office.
