Protestors defiant as shutdown in Darjeeling enters 10th day
Darjeeling has become the centre for the Gorkhaland protest with GJM taking up the mantle demanding the separate state. The indefinite protest has resulted in shutdown of the hills which has entered the 10th day.
Darjeeling has been under shutdown for the last 10 days with protestors demanding a separate state of Gorkhaland.
Protesters marched through the streets in several places.
Elected members of the Gorkha Territorial Administration (GTA) belonging to the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) which is leading the stir, resigned en masse yesterday.
Internet services were suspended for the seventh day and local cable channels remained blocked in certain parts of the hills.
Huge number of cops have been deployed to control the protests. The cops are complaining that the same food- Khichdi - is being provided to them everyday.
West Bengal government offered a dialogue to defuse the crisis with Home Secretary Malay De saying that the doors of the government were 'open for talks to restore normalcy in the hills'.
