Karl & his inca bling

At Baselworld this year, a lot of visitors might have reined in their urge to borrow designer Karl Lagerfeld’s dark glasses (that he almost never takes off) when they set their eyes on the jewellery collection that he has created in collaboration with Atelier Swarovski.

While he might have just refused them on their face, he wouldn’t have denied a closer look.

And for all those who were nowhere near the Swiss village during the watch and jewellery show, will have to wait until September when it launches at Karl Lagerfeld stores and website (karl.com), Swarovski Crystal World locations and selected retailers. The pieces are priced at $54-$270.

Inspired by the symbols of the lost Inca Empire, the collection is divided into three categories: Ikonic, Klassic Karl and Essentials.

Replete with bling factor, the Ikonic line is influenced by musical styles. Klassic Karl is inspired by Choupette (Lagerfeld’s cat).

Essentials has crystallised everyday pieces. Finished with gold (both yellow and rose) or rhodium plating, the line has neckpieces, chains, personalised charms, ear jackets and studs encrusted with Swarovski crystals and some with pearls.

Constantly looking for newer avenues to express his creativity, the Paris-based, German designer, with a fine photography skill, is unstoppable at 84.
