When purchasing upholstered furniture, the major factors that come into consideration are the colour, the fabric style and its durability. Different people have different needs and different uses of their spaces, so here’s what to keep in mind when you go upholstery shopping.

Colour: The colour is the first thing to take into account when buying upholstery for your sofa or chairs. You have to live with it for a long time, so select wisely. While neutrals are the safest way to go, you can also go bold with your choice of colours as long as they complement the drapes, rugs and wall paint.

Quick tip: Pick lighter shades if your room is small and has less natural light. But if the room is large and light is ample, go with any colour.

Durability: This decision should be based on the type of room and the personal aspects of your family. For instance, durability becomes a huge factor if you have kids and pets. Avoid delicate silks if that is the case and go for stronger materials like polyester or blends. Keep in mind that woven patterns are stronger than printed patterns. So, tight weaves and high thread counts matter. What is thread count? Actually, thread count means the number of threads on each square inch of a certain type of fabric. In other words, denser fabrics stand the test of time.

Style: The type of fabric you choose should match the character and style of the furniture. For instance, a traditional fabric is an ideal choice for a traditional frame. It’s also important to note that some fabrics look casual, while others appear formal. You should go for a fabric that suits your room décor. Also, take into account the scale of pattern —- it should be right sized for the piece of furniture that it is going to cover. In a big room, a big bold pattern may be a better choice. Quick tip: Keep your sofas in a solid shade and cover one or two armchairs in a bold, bright pattern to add drama.

Special considerations: If you are allergic to a certain type of fabric, consider buying materials made from micro fibre. It is lint-free and won’t get a lot of dust on it. You should also consider buying fabric that resists mildew, especially if you reside in a climate that is humid. If you are going to place your  upholstered furniture in a room with a lot of sunlight, you should look for something that is fade resistant.
