Haute heels

Fashion designers Gauri and Nainika debut a sassy shoe collection for online retailer Koovs

You know you have struck the jackpot when you net a Gauri & Nainika steel grey ruffled smock dress for simply Rs 499 in a slash sale online. Even better than last year when crazily enough, there were cut-out G & N pencil dresses in maxi cuts, complete with the hoopla of designer boxes and crisp paper packaging, delivered at your doorstep for a cool Rs 2,000 or so.

The edgiest designer duo on the block has nailed it effectively, in collaboration with Koovs.com, and is now out with their second collection—this time, it’s a limited edition of sassy party shoes. Barely a week into the launch and the haute heels are already flying off the online shelves.

“Our clothes have always been beautiful, feminine and glamorous,” says Nainika. “But priced at the higher end. Collaborating with Koovs has been a way of widening the reach of our brand. We design, Koovs produces and the astute scalability brings in the affordable prices. So this way, Gauri and I get to reach out to young cosmopolitan women who love fashion.” A win-win situation, clearly.

Like their clothes, the footwear collection is a richly textured and glamorous affair, and exudes exactly the kind of sexy vibe you would expect from the designer sisters. Inspired by “Parisian panache,” coupled with the classic styles of fashion icons such as Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn, the pumps, block heels and stilettos come in party-appropriate hues like gold, silver, metallic pink, burgundy, electric blue and flaming red. Besides, of course, the staple black. Certainly not for the demure dresser, these shoes are meant for partying.

“Like our brand, the design philosophy behind the shoe line is also all about ultra-feminine glamour. We have used rich fabrics like duchess satin and velvet and the goal is to give the collection a luxurious feel,” say the designers. Indeed, the classic medley of ruffles and pearls and multiple textures revs up the oomph quotient of the classic cuts and clever engineering of the heels.

“Since we aren’t very tall ourselves, we are obsessed with high-heeled shoes,” says Gauri. “And this gave us a chance to really make the kind of shoes we are always searching for but cannot find,” she adds. “However, while the heels may be high, the idea was to create comfortable showstoppers,” shares Nainika. The collection comprises 19 styles ranging from Rs 2,100
to Rs 3,000.

With playful accents and youthful exuberance, the glitzy collection is all about having fun, just like the sisters’ signature style. Go, shop!
