Actor Dharamendra recently turned 80. The original “He Man” of India still maintains a healthy lifestyle. “I do regular exercise. Even today I do cycling, walking, pranayaman and horse riding to stay fit,” says the matinee idol.

Fitness regime

I’ve always been physique conscious. I still do my dips. I regularly do cycling for 40 minutes. I know exactly how much my body can take at this age. I am very particular about my diet. I don’t indulge in eating anything fattening. I love drinking milk but I go for the skimmed one. Drinking alcohol spoiled my health in the past. But now I am again addicted to exercise. I have even made a gym in my bungalow. I workout with Sunny and Bobby. Due to back problem I cannot lift weights. I go to the gym everyday. I truly believe that a healthy soul is the way to a healthy body—it helps you in all other aspects of your life. Keeping yourself healthy helps as you age.

Diet

I enjoy home cooked food—be it idli-sambhar cooked in olive oil. It is supposed to be good for health, and lower in cholesterol. I eat mostly vegetarian fare at home, it’s easier to digest. I eat non-vegetarian food occasionally. I relish simple, home-cooked food.

Fitenss achievement

I have quit drinking. I had destroyed myself as an actor with my drinking habit in the past. Now I am hooked to fitness. I make sure I’m active by going for regular walks and also do an hour of pranayaman daily. Pranayama opens your mind and gets rid of so many ailments—it’s helped me a great deal and I recommend it to everyone.

Fitness Mantra

My mantra in life is to stay positive.
