Majority of Indians suffer from poor muscle health

HYDERABAD: As many as 71 per cent of Indians are suffering from poor muscle health, while Hyderabad (75 per cent) has the third highest percentage of people with poor muscle health, says a study.

The study undertaken by Inbody, a global leader in body composition analysis, said that muscle health is often ignored since it is misunderstood as an area which is of relevance only to a sportsperson or a gym goer.

InBody, which conducted a recent nationwide study in association with IPSOS, leading global market and opinion research firm, said in its report here on Thursday.

The study which was conducted across eight cities- Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Patna and Hyderabad covering 1,243 people.

The respondents were a mix of working and non-working individuals between the age of 30 and 55 years.

As per the study, 71 per cent Indians suffer from poor muscle health and need to gain muscle mass.

Poor muscle mass could lead to impaired muscle function, fatigue and poor metabolic health, it cautioned.

Statistics indicated that Lucknow has the highest percentage of 81 per cent having poor muscle mass including males (82pc) and females (80pc) followed by Patna ( 77pc) and Hyderabad (75pc), including males (78%) and 72%) while the lower percentage of males and females with poor muscle mass reported in Delhi ( 64% ), the report stated.

Nutrition and exercise have been shown to play a major role in improving muscle health.

With reference to nutrition, one specific nutrient that plays a role in muscle health is protein.

The present research acknowledges the importance of protein in daily diet and exercise to maintain good muscle health, the report added.

According to the study, 7 out of 10 people at the pan India level having poor muscle health is a matter of great concern and it is important to find out ways and means to address this issue.

There is an urgent need to spread awareness about Muscle Health, role of adequate protein intake and exercise for a healthy life.
