Who is god? where is he hidden?

The supreme self in us rises like fire and presents itself to be the most peaceful, wholesome and steady part of our own self. This part of our own self, we call God.

Where is God and in what form is he? Can he be seen? These are the questions that keep constantly assailing us. The Amrita Bindu Upanishad verses give us a clear understanding about where God lies and how to express Him in our lives.

The supreme truth is present in us in the most secret manner like ghee is present in milk. The awareness that you and I exist in each and every being. How do I realise it? Constantly it has to be churned with the equipment to assist the churning called the mind.

By holding on to the rope called the eye of wisdom or knowledge, the mind has to be churned. The supreme truth in the form of awareness has to be invoked and raised like fire.
This self is just one. It has no parts to it. It is completely still, quiet and peaceful. That self or Brahman is none other than me is the wise understanding of the man of wisdom.

We get ghee out of buttermilk, which is diluted from curd. The curd is milk set to culture with a little curd and allowed to settle to become thick. Even then, we rarely look at milk as a means of holding butter from which ghee is obtained. In the same way, awareness is present in every pore and part of our being. Like ghee or butter, this awareness does not present itself so easily to our naked eyes. It expresses and manifests with common practice.

The practice is by churning. How is the churning done? I take up one statement from the Vedas to contemplate upon. For instance, the word among the four Vedas that denote our true nature is Pragnanam Brahma—consciousness is Brahman.

This statement alone—in Sanskrit or in English—is enough for me to contemplate, from morning to night.
To the exclusion of other thoughts, I go on contemplating the Sanskrit phrase or the logical meaning of the words in English about the oneness of consciousness. When that thought is constantly churned, the energy or awareness that is hidden in our system like butter in milk, will rise up.

Perceived in this light of awareness, everything in this universe is clear as a crystal. Our effort is to bring the mind to this state of constant sadhana to raise our own awareness by ourselves.
The supreme self in us rises like fire and presents itself to be the most peaceful, wholesome and steady part of our own self. This part of our own self, we call God.
