Dheeraj Pandey: The Nutanix man

He is the co-founder of Nutanix, one of the fastest-growing enterprise appliance companies in the world

The most successful tech entrepreneurs are those who see the future. As flash storage gets cheaper and network speeds increase, that future is converged storage which brings storage and computing entities which are traditionally kept apart into one single entity which is placed inside commodity hardware thereby changing the idea of large data centres as we know them today. Dheeraj Pandey saw this future and so has co-founded Nutanix, one of the fastest-growing enterprise appliance companies in the world, for which he also acts as the CEO. Pandey, a PhD dropout with a master’s degree in computer science from the University of Texas, Austin, also has a BS in computer science from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, where he was adjudged the ‘Best All-Rounder Student Among All Graduating Students in All Disciplines’.

In a career spanning more than a decade, Pandey has worked at some of the best-known tech companies in Silicon Valley. One of his most well-known positions was as a software development senior manager at Oracle Corporation where he managed the storage engine group. Later as a director of engineering and as a vice-president of engineering at Aster Data Systems (later Teradata). In 2009, he quit to co-found Nutanix, which has achieved a $80m annualised run rate in less than four years and which plans to take on some of the biggest players in the field by building software-defined computing platform for next-generation data centres.
