Meet the man behind Moto G who is responsible for ‘all things software at Motorola’.

As Motorola and Google want to sell smartphones to the next 500 million people in markets like India, they turned to an Indian to bring that dream alive. In Sao Paulo, at the launch of Moto G, all eyes were on that man. Punit Soni, the Vice President of Product Management at Motorola Mobility, is the man behind Moto G and responsible for ‘all things software at Motorola’. Soni has a BTech in Electronics and communications Engineering from the National Institute of Technology, Kurukshetra, an MS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Wyoming, and an MBA in Venture Capital from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

He started his career at the start of the century as a software engineer and worked in many software companies like Avanti Corporation and Cadence Design systems before joining Google in 2007 as a Product Manager. In that role he has launched Google News Archives and Magazines, and has been instrumental in launching operations in India to provide back-end infrastructural support. Later in various roles at Google like the Mobile Product Manager, the Lead Product Manager of Mobile Apps and as a Group Product Manager, Soni has worked on some of the most important products that have come out of the Googleplex. In 2012, when Google bought Motorola Mobility and wanted to make executive changes at the ailing phone manufacturer, Soni was the obvious choice to lead the product management teams which finally came up with the Moto X and Moto G.
