When GM Sets Sail

The new GM Sail is a very strong contender in the midsize sedan category. Available in both petrol and diesel options, Sail is a pretty good city car and a good value for money. Ammar Alvi has more.
In the looks segment the Sail is unmistakably an off-shoot of the UVA Sail hatchback, very similar till the B pillar but when you move more towards the back you find the boot. There is just a single character line running from the front fender to the tail lights to give the otherwise plain-jane design some much-needed depth. Otherwise everything is clean with big reflector headlamps, strong Chevy grille with chrome, eight-spoke alloy wheels, short overhangs and muscular stance. All in all, the Sail sedan comes across as a handsome car with a decent boot as well which has been merged well in the hatchback.
Inside too, the sedan has the same interiors of the hatch. The width and the wheelbase are exactly the same and as a result so is the space. Some smart packaging means the Sail comfortably accommodates three people abreast. The front seats are pretty accommodating as well but again devoid of any driver seat height adjustment or a dead pedal. Design, like on the outside, is pretty straightforward. No snazzy shapes on the dash, no radical console and the steering is still devoid of any audio controls. No climate control either. The dated rotary dials are retained in the sedan. There is a lot of space in the form of cup holders and storage spaces. The boot space too is quite impressive with a well-designed loading bay.
The Sail is powered by the S-TEC II petrol and the Smartech diesel engines. The petrol is powered by the 1.3 litre engine belting out 86 PS @ 6000 rpm and 113 Nm @ 4400 rpm. The engine is peppy, refined and if you keep it in the right powerband it gives you the best performance. The diesel on the other hand is powered by a 1.3 litre engine that belts out 78 PS @4000 rpm and 205 Nm of torque available from as low as 1750 rpm and it has plenty to offer. Throttle response is pretty good and hard acceleration in first and second gear gets the front tyres chirping quite easily. Mid range is quite good and as a result one won’t have to change gears frequently when driven around town. The engine gets quite noisy outside but the cabin is pretty well insulated. Overall our pick would be diesel as you would get a good return on mileage and pretty decent drive.
With the midsize segment pretty much in demand with Suzuki Swift Dzire, Toyota Etios, the Sail for sure sets sail and has a long innings provided the company keeps improvising and bringing new updates when needed.
