Good Thing in a Small Package

The small car segment in India has witnessed a major churning over the last few years with more and more cars coming in and differentiating the segment based on trims and price level. German auto giant Volkswagen had been thinking of enlarging its small car portfolio in India and moved a step ahead with the launch of the most powerful diesel hatch in the country, the Polo GT TDI. Ammar Alvi took it on a spin and has more
It has the looks of Polo but the power of the sedan, in fact, it can beat any executive sedan in performance. The new Polo GT TDI is the most powerful diesel hatchback in the country.
Powered by the 1.6 litre TDI engine that you find in the VW Vento and Skoda Rapid, the Volkswagen Polo GT TDI packs 105PS of power and 250Nm of torque. The engine is mated to a five-speed manual gearbox as is the case with its sedan counterpart. Performance figures are also not bad, from standstill to 100km/h in about 10 seconds and an ARAI-certified mileage figure of 19.78 kmpl makes it a very good option.
Just like its petrol sibling which was launched in the first half of 2013, the Polo GT TDI comes loaded with a host of equipment such as climate control, a multifunction vehicle info display for the driver, remote central locking armed with engine immobilizer with floating code, anti-pinch power windows, lane change indicator, ABS, dual airbags, rear defogger and wash wipe, front and rear fog lamps, a double din Bluetooth, SD card and USB enabled stereo with steering mounted controls, leather wrapped steering wheel, gear knob and handbrake, 12V power outlet in centre console, chrome interior trim and an aluminium pedal cluster. These features you normally find in the premium executive sedans and VW’s idea behind this is to make the GT comparable to the entry level executive sedans.
The drive is also upto VW standards; for city this is a fantastic buy, easy to handle, peppy yet sporty driving makes it fun. The car is best at low torque and even on highways it is very grounded and dynamic. The suspension is just right for the Indian roads and small bumps are not a huge issue.
The Volkswagen Polo GT TDI will be available in three shades only, namely, Candy White, Flash Red, Deep Black Pearl. However, there is a price for the most powerful diesel hatch; the Polo GT TDI comes at `8.08 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
The company is hoping that with the TDI it would create a new segment of performance loving customers who expect a little more fun at the cost of cheaper mileage and better performance. Expect more down the lane!
