Very few people play pivotal roles at Facebook and Google, two world-changing companies that touch billions of people every day. Gokul Rajaram is one of those few people. Rajaram is the Product Engineering Lead at Square, the mobile payments company. In that position he oversees Square Register, the point of sale system that helps small or medium businesses in using iPads to accept card or even cash payments. Rajaram has a BTech in Computer Science from IIT-Kanpur where he received a President’s Gold Medal. He also has an MS in the same discipline from the University of Texas, Austin, and an MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management. Often called the ‘Godfather of Adsense’, Rajaram is credited with conceiving and implementing the Adsense product at Google as a Product Management Director. By the time he left Google it grew into a multi-billion dollar cash cow and is now one of the biggest revenue streams for Google. He then co-founded and acted as the CEO of Chai Labs, a semantic tech company which was acquired by Facebook. Because of the acquihire, Rajaram became the Product Director of Ads at the social network and gave birth to the company’s advertising products which finally made it a profitable company.
