Micromax Funbook Alpha P250

(WiFi, 3G, Rs 6,075)

The first thing that strikes you when you look at the Micromax Funbook Alpha P250 is how attractive it is despite being priced very modestly. The slate grey model has a 7-inch capacitive touchscreen which is supported by a 1GHz Cortex-A8 processor and 512MB of RAM. Like all modern tablets, it runs on Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich and comes pre-installed with apps like Mi Movie and Mi Store from Micromax. The internal storage of 4GB can be expanded up to 32GB using a microSD card. Along with the usual WiFi, it connects and works with pretty much any 3G dongle to give you Internet access on the move. On the flipside, the primary camera is a 0.3 megapixel disappointment but then again it is a budget tablet.

HCL ME Tablet U1

(WiFi, 3G, Rs 6,999)

At first sight it looks like HCL’s ME Tablet U1 has everything going for it. A whitish case with a 7-inch LED capacitive multi-touchscreen, a 1GHz processor, and 512Mb RAM all of which come together to run Android 4.0. It has the budget customary 4GB of internal space that can be expanded to 32GB and the 0.3 megapixel primary camera. It supports WiFi and 3G dongles. Just when you thought it is a good buy, HCL went ahead and did something inexplicable. It removed the Google Play application store from Android and replaced it with HCL ME Smart apps store. This gives you three options. That of installing the Play store if you know how, or of sticking with the HCL store, or that of not buying it at all.

ZenFocus myZenTab

708BH (WiFi, 3G, Rs 7,899)

The myZenTab is a rarity. It is a budget tablet from the IT Assets and Service Management Solutions company ZenFocus, aimed at the enterprise customer. The iron grey metal shell packs a 7-inch capacitive touchscreen which is supported by 512MB of RAM and a Boxchip A10 chip. It has other features like a 0.3 megapixel front camera, 8GB of internal memory that can be extended up to 32GB, support for external mouse and keyboards through USB, HDMI support for 1080p video streaming and supports WiFi as well as 3G dongles. The Ice Cream Sandwich-flavoured Android 4.0 comes pre-loaded with apps like an e-book reader and 3D games.

Mitashi PLAY BE 100

(WiFi, 3G, Rs 6,790)

Mitashi calls the PLAY its Business Entertainment tablet. Like almost every other budget tablet, it has the usual specs like a 7-inch touchscreen, a 1GHz processor and 512MB of RAM all of which run Android 4.0 with an internal storage capacity of 4GB. The party trick is that for another Rs 1,300, Mitashi gives you the KB 100 fully-functional keyboard which connects to the tablet through its USB slot and gives you the flexibility of a good convertible at budget prices.
