Open your window to a whole new world

When old homes are broken down to make way for new apartments, their doors and windows get thrown away as well. But if you’re smart, you will go and salvage some to reuse and recycle in a variety of ways. Here’s how.

Pre-framed canvas: Clean the glass properly and then give vent to your artistic creativity using the glass as your canvas. Make sure you use glass paints for that which can be found in any stationary shop these days.

Photo finish: If you don’t want to try your hand at brushwork, you can simply use them as photo frames. Stick your favourite pictures directly on the glass with double-sided tape. That way, you can rotate your favourite pictures and photographs as and when you wish.

Just the frame: Ditch the glass and just paint the frame. You can customise it to your home, blending it with the interior design or really go wild and shock visitors with a wall full of windows frames.

Mirror mojo: Remove the pane of glass, paint the frame to your liking, and install a mirror in it. It can hang on the wall as an ornament in just about any room. What’s more, if you find a long, vertically narrow window, it could be used as a full body mirror.

Coffee table top: Remove the hinges from the side, add a few legs and voila, you got a table. You can even put hot drinks on the glass without coasters!  Shuttered or louvred window doors can be used to make a great side table as well. Just put the frames together and use a glass top or even a wooden slab.

Pin-up boards: Shuttered windows also make for great pin-up boards. Use them as it is or paint them a bright hue and shove in your cards, pictures, bills and memos in the grooves.

Makeshift greenhouse: If you don’t have a greenhouse, you can create an improvised one with windows. Using bricks or other objects, raise windows off the ground and put plants that need a little extra protection from the elements underneath. This can be especially useful for some seedlings that you started inside and are ready for the outdoors but need more transition time before being transplanted to the garden.

So there, use your ingenuity and creativity to bring new life to them, and in doing so, prevent more waste from going to the trash heap.
