Delhi gang-rape victim stable, but critical

The vital parameters of the 23-year-old Delhi gang-rape victim are within acceptable limits, doctors said on Thursday. 

Dr B D Athani, Additional Director General of the Safdarjung hospital, said the night was uneventful and her vital parameters are within acceptable limits.  A team of eight doctors, led by chief surgeon of Safdarjung hospital, Dr Sunil Jain removed her badly damaged intestines on Wednesday.  “Infection is an impending danger and to avert that we are giving her antibiotics. Next 7-10 days are very critical as there is impending danger of infection. She is making attempts to breathe on her own. She has to come out of this acute crisis, then we will talk about what is the next step,” Dr Athani said. The doctors added that the victim was showing immense fighting spirit.

A hospital official said the girl asked her family whether the accused have been caught.  “She wrote on a paper and communicated with her family. She is aware that the matter has been taken up by the media,” he said. Dr Jain on Wednesday said  in his 30 years of professional experience, he has never seen such grave injuries to the intestine in cases of sexual assault.
