Violence claims one life in West Bengal

One person was killed andanother injured in violence that rocked Tehatta borderingNadia district today, with villagers claiming that the deathwas caused due to police firing.

Official sources are yet to confirm whether the policeopened fire on a crowd which set up a road blockade at PWDMore on Krishnagar-Karimpur highway at Tehatta in protestagainst the refusal of police permission to allow a Jagaddharipuja at their chosen venue.

Agitators set fire to police vehicles and threw brickbatsat policemen who arrived on the spot to break the blockade.

A high-level meeting was held at the state secretariatwhere the chief secretary, home secretary, IGP (law and order)and top police officers reviewed the situation at Tehatta.

No official version of the incident was, however,given by the government.

The Congress and the CPI(M) claimed that the policeopened fire on a peaceful crowd in which one person waskilled.

WBPCC chief Pradip Bhattacharya urged Chief MinisterMamata Banerjee to "discipline" her police. "The chiefminister will definitely deny police firing, but she shouldadmit the fact," he said.

CPI(M) leader Mohd Salim alleged that the police openedfire on a peaceful crowd without issuing any prior warning.
