Music it seems has a key role in fashion. It is an effective accompaniment to the rhythmic movement of the models sashaying down the ramp. Designer Anita Dongre tried to add another dimension to her presentation at Lakme Fashion Week at the Hyatt in Mumbai by roping in performance artist Sona Mohapatra.
Anita’s collection of ‘Jaipur Bride 2013’ and menswear accompanied by the live performance of Sona and her troupe appeared to have done the trick of attracting the attention of the audience.
Sona says, “I identify with Anita’s strength as a woman who has chalked her own path, a visionary and a leader. Anita’s designs are rooted in our country’s ethos and rich traditions and like me she too is interested in reinventing our roots. I admire her ability to create pret and couture effortlessly.”
Sona’s rendering of Hindi folk, ‘thumris’ and ‘Sufiana Kalam’ with her booming voice complemented with Anita’s designs that employed vibrant colours of Rajasthan. Anita says, “What I love about Sona other than her amazing voice and her passion for folk music is the fact that she epitomises the woman that I design for - supremely confident of her Indianness. She truly is a model for my designs.”
Anita feels the Rajasthan inspired collection portrays the myriad moods of her bridal muse - Nayantara. A princess who is abroad but has roots in India and as a young, effervescent girl who challenges convention yet loves all things traditional. “Her style sensibilities allow her to beautifully marry the timelessness of tradition with the simplicity of contemporary design,” Anita said.
The Jaipur Bride 2013 is inspired by the Jantar Mantar with the ensembles shaped from the linear symmetry and embroidered in geometric shapes and patterns. The bridal lehengas, too, showcase an innovative geometric synergy echoing the architectural splendour and detailing of Jantar Mantar.
“I feel comfortable wearing clothes designed by Anita and I take them to international performances. My music connects to her designs,” says Sona.
