India will be looking to reset ties with Maldives, with newly-elected President Abdulla Yameen landing here on New Year’s day on his first official overseas visit.  Yameen’s visit was earlier scheduled for December but it had to be postponed, with the President going on his customary end-of-year Southern sojourn.

He will be in India till January 4. Sources said that there are not likely to be announcements of new sops, with the main pledge being to fulfil all commitments made to Maldives in 2012, before the freeze in ties over the cancellation of GMR group’s contract to develop the Male International Airport. This includes the restart of the standby credit facility of $100 million, of which India has only given two tranches so far.
