The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has established an endowed fellowship at the Graduate Aerospace Laboratories of California Institute of Technology (CALTECH), USA, in memory of former ISRO chairman Satish Dhawan.

In a press release issued on Monday, ISRO stated that Dhawan was an alumnus of CALTECH and had obtained his PhD in aerospace from the institute in 1951.  Dhawan had also served as the distinguished visiting professor at the institute between 1971 and 1982 just before he took over as ISRO chairman.  He was awarded CALTECH’s highest alumnus honour in 1969 and the Padma Vibhushan in 1981. The fellowship provides an excellent opportunity every year starting from the winter session of the academic year 2013-14 to one meritorious graduating student from the Aerospace Department of the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram to pursue a Masters degree in Aerospace Engineering at CALTECH, the release said.

ISRO also runs RESPOND programme for conducting research and development activities related to space science, technology and applications for academia within India. The programme has an annual budget of `15 crore.
