'BJP-led NDA only alternative to defunct UPA'

In the political resolution adopted at Goa conclave, the BJP said: “The people have already decided to kick out the UPA and welcome the NDA.

Signalling a major electoral battle, the BJP said dethroning the Congress-led Government was its historic duty, and that the party-led NDA was the only credible alternative to the defunct UPA.

In the political resolution adopted at Goa conclave, the BJP said: “The people have already decided to kick out the UPA and welcome the NDA. The BJP is the vehicle for bringing this resolved into reality.”

The second resolution to be adopted in the two-day conclave was moved by former party president Nitin Gadkari and seconded by Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and his Madhya Pradesh counterpart Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

It was during his intervention that Parrikar asked the party to shed its indecisiveness and take a bold decision, with an apparent reference to Narendra Modi’s elevation.

Sources said he was the only leader who prominently raised the issue in a broad manner.

The resolution patted the BJP-ruled governments in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Punjab and Goa for a “sterling performance that has won the hearts of the people”. “These governments, alone or in alliance, have lifted millions from the degradation of poverty through economic growth and honestly-administered welfare programmes,” it said.

Presenting itself as a credible opposition, the BJP defined secularism in contrast to the appeasement policy of the Congress.

“Every community, whether of the majority or minority religious or caste persuasion, is equal. The true meaning of secularism is ‘sarva dharma sambhav’. Our positive discrimination programmes have recognised hunger as the true problem that needs emergency attention; and our gender promotion programmes cut across every divide,” the resolution added.

The resolution, which aimed at giving direction to the party, attacked the UPA Government for its poor track record in terms of governance, economic crisis and corruption.

It virtually sounded like a poll promise. “The BJP shall continue to serve the people by taking up their cause and challenging this decrepit government. We promise the people that it shall restore our nation’s pride in itself and relieve our country from gloom and depression.

It is a proven fact that the NDA under the able leadership of Atal Bihari Vajpayee had taken the country way ahead on the path of progress,” the resolution said.
