Stone laid for Sikh genocide memorial

The foundation stone for 1984 Sikh Genocide Memorial was laid in Gurdwara Rakab Ganj Sahib Complex in Delhi on Wednesday.

The ceremony was held in the presence of BJP president Rajnath Singh, Lok Sabha Opposition Leader Sushma Swaraj, Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, Delhi BJP president Vijay Goyal and Rajya Sabha MP Naresh Gujral.

Jathedars of five Takhats (head priests of Sikhs), other leaders of the BJP, Shiromani AKali Dal and Avtar Singh Makkar, presidents of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and Manjit Singh G K, president of Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) took part.

Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court took up the petition filed by Paramjit Singh Sarna against the construction of the memorial in the Gurdwara complex.  However, the court refused to entertain contempt plea filed by Sarna seeking a stay on the memorial construction.
