Landslides on way to Nathu La, Army rescues over 250 tourists

The Army today said that it has rescued more than 250 tourists stranded at Kyangonosa La on J N Marg on way to Nathu La in Sikkim after landslides, caused by heavy rainfall, blocked the road.

Army units at Kyangonosa La rescued the stranded tourists who spent the night out in the cold at a place where no hotels and civilian facilities existed, defence sources here said.

The jawans provided centrally heated accommodation and hot meals to about 230 tourists. They also supplied milk to 51 children among the stranded tourists.

Sources said that the tourists moved out to Gangtok today.

The Army has conveyed to the state authorities the warning received from the MET department of heavy rainfall in areas adjoining Gangtok in the next two to three days and called for ensuring safety of tourists.
