For a few hours on Monday, a five-star hotel here witnessed a free-for-all where hundreds of supporters of Union Steel Minister Beni Prasad Verma were seen jostling for cell phones and cash.

The event was a meeting convened to elect members of the Steel Consumer Council. Every member who filled up a form and submitted two photographs was given Rs 8,000, a cell phone and a briefcase. The aspirants included laymen who didn’t seem to know anything about the council.

Beni had also invited journalists from Lucknow, Faizabad, Basti, Gonda and Ambedkar Nagar.

And Beni’s freebie bash invited sharp reactions from the ruling SP as well as the BJP.

“Beni Verma has already lost the election in Gonda and is trying to bribe people in order to get some supporters,” said Uttar Pradesh government spokesperson Rajendra  , while demanding an inquiry into the incident.
