The stage is set for another round of slanging match between the UPA Government, which has entered its last leg, and the spirited Opposition.

The Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj  has opposed the UPA Government’s move to appoint senior lawyer P P Rao as member of the selection committee of Lokpal saying the jurist was identified with the Congress party.

As the UPA Government managed to appoint Rao as member, as other members in the PM-led committee too seconded it, Sushma would take up the matter with President Pranab Mukherjee and seek his intervention to choose a new member.

Sushma opposed it during the meeting convened by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday to appoint an eminent jurist to the selection committee.

Among the list of seven probables, (which included names such as Fali Nariman, Mohan Gopal and Chandrasekhar Pillai) for the post, the Prime Minister picked up Rao.  Sushma said as Rao was identified with the ruling party, some other person must be picked up. She even suggested names of lawyers such as Harish Salve and Soli Saorabjee (whose names were not on the seven-member panel), and even pressed for the meeting to be deferred.

But as the Prime Minister insisted that name be finalised now, the BJP leader then suggested K Parasaran, whose name was also on the list. However, Singh again backed Rao.

As all efforts by the PM failed to get Sushma’s nod, the decision was taken by the majority vote. A letter was drafted stating the facts, and even recording the Leader of Opposition’s dissent.
