Google Sings a Tune for Nightingale

Today's Google doodle sports a nightingale -- India's very own Sarojini Naidu.. Poet, freedom fighter, politician, Sarojini Naidu was many roles rolled into one.

A child prodigy born in the city of Nizams on February 13, 1879 to Aghore Nath Chattopadhyay and Barada Sundari Debi, Sarojini Naidu was the eldest among the eight siblings.  Naidu began her writing at the age of 13 and published her first collection of poems at the age of 26. Her birthday is celebrated as Women's Day in India.

Sarojini Naidu was a strong woman voice in India's cry for the freedom. She was the first Indian woman to become the Governor of state. She was also the first woman President of Indian National Congress.

Sarojini Naidu played a leading role in the Civil Disobedience Movement and Quit India movement. She was very active in the political circle that mobilised the freedom movement of India. She was part of the coteries that included names like Gopal Krishna Gokhale, Rabindranath Tagore, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Annie Besant, C. P. Ramaswami Iyer, Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru.
