Keeping in mind the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, Union Minister of Environment and Forests M Verrappa Moily said the Ministry has received representations of five of the six states on the Kasturirangan panel report on Western Ghats and a decision would be taken as soon as it hears from all the states. “I have written to all the six states in the Western Ghats region seeking their views on the Kasturirangan panel report. We have started receiving replies from them and as soon as we get all the replies, the Ministry will take a call,” said Moily.
Moily said Chief Ministers of three states have met him personally while two have sent their representations. Moily on January 16 had written to all six states seeking their views on the High Level Working Group (HLWG) recommendations, especially on concerns which might not have been addressed. “I can assure you there will be no delay from the Environment Ministry (on taking a call on the report),” he said. The HLWG had declared the 37 per cent of the Western Ghats as Ecologically Sensitive Area.
